Robert Oscar Lenkiewicz (December 1941 – August 2002) was one of South West England’s most celebrated artists of modern times. He painted on a large scale, usually in themed Projects investigating hidden communities or difficult social issues. The new painting on the upper deck of the Library is one from Project 17 “Observations on Local Education” on the theme of Education and was first exhibited by the Plymouth based artist in 1988.
He painted over 500 subjects for the project and all from the Chief Education Officer to lavatory attendants, were from the world of education. In addition to the paintings two large volumes of work were produced in which each of the sitters wrote 1000 words or more on their feelings about education.
